The Carolina Hurricanes announced today, September 24th, that they have acquired defenseman Joel Edmundson ($3.1 million AAV), forward Dominik Bokk ($0, AHL/Jr), and the St. Louis Blues’ 2021 seventh round pick in exchange for their 2020 fifth round pick and defenseman Justin Faulk ($4,833,333 AAV). The ‘Canes also retained 14% ($676,667) of Faulk’s salary, so his cap hit for the Blues will only be $4,156,666. It was then announced almost immediately that the Blues had resigned Faulk to a seven-year contract extension worth $45.5 million ($6.5 million AAV), which was reportedly a requirement set by the Blues or this trade would not have happened.
Faulk appeared in all 82 games for the Hurricanes last season, in which he produced 11 goals and 24 assists. He then played in all 15 of the team’s playoff games, through which he tallied one goal and seven assists. Drafted in the second round (37th overall) of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft by Carolina, Faulk has appeared in 559 career NHL games, over which he has recorded 85 goals and 173 assists. The 27-year-old defenseman is leaving the only organization that he has known over eight season NHL and slightly over eight season professional career in the Hurricanes after turning pro following his freshman season at the University of Minnesota-Duluth.
Edmundson appeared in 64 games for the Blues last season, in which he produced two goals and nine assists. He then played in 22 of the team’s playoff games on their way to winning their first Stanley Cup, through which he tallied one goal and six assists. Drafted in the second round (46th overall) of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft by St. Louis, Edmundson has appeared in 269 career NHL games, over which he has recorded 13 goals and 29 assists. The 26-year-old defenseman is leaving the only organization he has known over his four season NHL and six season professional career.
Bokk has yet to play in North America, but he appeared in 47 games for Växjö Lakers HC of the SHL, in which he produced eight goals and 15 assists. He also played in one game for the Växjö Lakers HC J20 of the Swedish SuperElit league, through which he put up one goal and zero assists. He then appeared in six playoff games for Växjö in the SHL, in which he tallied two goals and one assist. Finally, he played in one playoff game for Växjö J20 of the SuperElit league, through which he recorded zero goals and one assist. Drafted 25th overall of the 2018 NHL Entry Draft by Carolina, Bokk has appeared in 66 career SHL games, over which he has produced nine goals and 16 assists. He has also played in 36 career games in the SuperElit league, in which he recorded 15 goals and 27 assists.
This post will be updated tomorrow with Faulk’s contract breakdown and my reaction to the trade and subsequent signing.
