Free Agency Recap: Philadelphia Flyers

Philadelphia was busy this offseason, as they added a ton of depth to their team. In terms of big moves, they traded for Kevin Hayes’ signing rights and signed him to a very large contract before the opening of free agency, and they also added Justin Braun via a trade with San Jose. Here is an overview of their free agency. 

  • Andy Andreoff, F. Andreoff was signed to a two year, $1.5 million contract with an AAV of $750,000.  He did not play any NHL games last season, but he did play in 75 games for the Tampa Bay Lightning’s AHL affiliate, the Syracuse Crunch, in which he tallied 55 points. He then played in four playoff games for the Crunch, in which he put up a single point. Over his AHL career, Andreoff has appeared in 232 games, over which he has produced 127 points. Over his NHL career, he has laced ‘em up 159 times and recorded 24 points. The 28-year-old center was drafted 80th overall in 2011 by the Los Angeles Kings, and this will be his third organization in what will be his ninth professional season.
  • Kurtis Gabriel, F. Gabriel was signed to a one year, $700,000 contract. Last season, he played in 22 games for the New Jersey Devils, in which he recorded four points. He also appeared in 32 games for their AHL affiliate, the Binghamton Devils, through which he tallied two goals and four assists. Over his AHL career, Gabriel has played in 264 games and produced 54 points. Over his NHL career, he has appeared in 38 games and over which he has produced four points. The 26-year-old winger was drafted 81st overall in 2013 by the Minnesota Wild, and this will be his third organization in what will be his seventh professional season.
  • Nate Prosser, D. Prosser was signed to a two year, $1.4 million contract that carries an AAV of $700,000. Last season, he played in 15 games for the Minnesota Wild, in which he failed to record a single point. He also played in 31 games for Minnesota’s AHL affiliate, the Iowa Wild, through which he produced eight points. He then appeared in 11 playoff games for Iowa, over which he tallied zero goals and one assist. Over his NHL career, Prosser has played in 354 games and produced 47 points. Over his AHL career, he has appeared in 127 games and recorded 39 points. The 33-year-old defenseman was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Minnesota Wild after the end of his senior season at Colorado College in 2009-10, and this will be his third organization over his 11 season professional career.
  • J.F. Berube, G. Berube was signed to a one year, $700,000 contract. He did not appear in an NHL game last season, but he did play in 43 games for the Columbus Blue Jackets’ AHL affiliate, the Cleveland Monsters, in which he posted a 3.01 GAA and a .896 SV%. Over his AHL career, Berube has appeared in 168 games, over which he owns a 2.48 GAA and a .909 SV%. Over his NHL career, he has played in 34 games, in which he has posted a 3.39 GAA and a .898 SV%. The 28-year-old netminder was drafted 95th overall in 2009 by the Los Angeles Kings, and this will be his fifth organization over his ten season professional career.
  • Tyler Wotherspoon, D. Wotherspoon was signed to a two year, $1.4 million contract that carries a $700,000 AAV. He did not appear in any NHL games last season, but he did play in 70 games with the St. Louis Blues’ AHL affiliate, the San Antonio Rampage, in which he recorded 22 points. Over his AHL career, Wotherspoon has played 355 games and produced 120 points. Over his NHL career, he has appeared in 30 games, over which he has tallied five points. The 26-year-old defenseman was drafted 57th overall in 2011 by the Calgary Flames, and this will be his third organization in what will be his seventh professional season.
  • Andy Welinski, D. Welinski was signed to a one year, $750,000 contract. Last season, he played in 26 games for the Anaheim Ducks, in which he recorded four points. He also appeared in 27 games for their AHL affiliate, the San Diego Gulls, through which he tallied 19 points. He then played in 16 playoff games for the Gulls, over which he produced three goals and seven assists. Over his AHL career, Welinski has appeared in 146 games and tallied 83 points. Over his NHL career, he has played in 33 games, over which he has produced six points. The 26-year-old defenseman was drafted 83rd overall by the Anaheim Ducks, and this will be his second organization in what will be his fifth professional season.
  • Kyle Criscuolo, F. Criscuolo was signed to a one year, $700,000 contract. He did not play in any NHL games last season, but he played in 43 games for the Buffalo Sabres’ AHL affiliate, the Rochester Americans, in which he produced 20 points. He then played in three playoff games for the team, through which he failed to record a single point. Over his AHL career, Criscuolo has appeared in 174 games and tallied 95 points. The 27-year-old winger was an undrafted free agent that signed with the Grand Rapid Griffins after immediately his senior season at Harvard University in 2015-16, and this will be his third organization in what will be his fifth professional season. 
  • Chris Bigras, D. Bigras was signed to a two year, $1.4 million contract that carries a $700,000 AAV. He did not play for the Rangers last season, but he played in 52 games for the New York Rangers’ AHL affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack, in which he tallied 22 points. Over his AHL career, Bigras has played in 179 games, over which he has produced 83 points. Over his NHL career, he has appeared in 46 games and has tallied four points. The 24-year-old defenseman was drafted 32nd overall by the Colorado Avalanche in 2013, and this will be his third organization in what will be his sixth professional season.
  • Scott Laughton, F. Laughton was resigned to a two-year contract worth $4.6 million that carries a $2.3 million AAV. Last season, he played in all 82 games for the Flyers, in which he recorded 32 points. Over his NHL career, Laughton has appeared in 272 games and produced 79 points. The 25-year-old winger was drafted 20th overall in 2012 by the Flyers, and they are the only team he has known over his six season NHL career.
  • Nicolas Aubé-Kubel, F. Aubé-Kubel was resigned to a one year contract worth $700,000. Last season, he appeared in his first career NHL games, as he played in nine for the Flyers, in which he failed to record a single point. He also played in 54 games for the Flyers’ AHL affiliate, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, through which he produced 30 points. Over his AHL career, Aubé-Kubel has appeared in 203 games and tallied 97 points. The 23-year-old winger was drafted 48th overall in 2014 by the Flyers, and they are the only organization he has known over his five season professional career.
