Penguins Trade for John Marino

Today, the Pittsburgh Penguins traded a conditional 2021 sixth-round pick to the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for the signing rights to defenseman John Marino. The Oilers will receive the sixth-round pick if he signs his entry-level contract prior to the 2021 NHL Entry draft or if the Penguins trade away his rights prior to that same draft.

Last season, he played in 33 games for the Harvard Crimson, in which he recorded 11 points. Over his NCAA career, he has played in 101 games, over which he has tallied 42 points. The 22-year-old defenseman will be returning for his senior season at Harvard this upcoming season and he will serve as one of the team’s two captains. The North Easton, Massachusetts native was drafted 154th overall in 2015 by the Edmonton Oilers.

My Reaction: I like this trade a lot as we added a solid defensive prospect with potential, and that never hurts when you have one of the NHL’s weakest prospect pools. He doesn’t put up a lot of points, but he is a very good +/- guy, as he hold a +39 through 101 NCAA games. I think this was worth it and it will be even more so if they let him play out his senior season this year and then sign him after.  It was also a low-risk, potentially high reward trade as if they decide they don’t want to sign him, Edmonton doesn’t get the pick, and even if they do, it’s a late round pick so it’s not that big of a deal to give it up. What could go wrong?
