The New York Islanders didn’t really do anything to improve their team in free agency. The only notable things they did were resign Andres Lee and replace Robin Lehner with Semyon Varlamov. Other than that, they just added a depth forward and goaltender. Here is a brief recap of their free agency.
- Anders Lee, F. Lee was resigned to a seven-year, $49 million contract with an AAV of $7 million. Last season, he appeared in all 82 games for the Islanders, in which he produced 51 points. He then played in eight playoff games for the team, through which he tallied four points. Over his NHL career, Lee has played in 425 games and scored 258 points. The 29-year-old winger was drafted 152nd overall in 2009 by the Islanders and is the only organization he has known over his eight-season NHL career.
- Semyon Varlamov, G. Varlamov signed a four year, $20 million deal that carries a $5 million AAV. Last season, he played in 49 games for the Colorado Avalanche, in which he posted a 2.87 GAA and a .909 SV%. Over his NHL career, Varlamov has appeared in 448 games, over which he owns a 2.68 GAA and a .916 SV%. The 31-year-old goaltender was drafted 23rd overall by the Washington Capitals in 2006, and this will be his third team in what will be his 12th NHL season.
- Cole Bardreau, F. Bardreau signed a two year, $1.4 million contract that carries an AAV of $700,000. Last year, he played in 40 games with Philadelphia’s AHL affiliate, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, in which he recorded 12 points. Over his AHL career, Bardreau has appeared in 226 games, during which he has tallied 98 points. He has yet to play in an NHL game but could see some time in the league this season. The 25-year-old center was an undrafted free agent that signed with Lehigh Valley after his senior season at Cornell University in 2014-15, and this will be his second organization in what will be his sixth professional season.
- Jared Coreau, G. Coreau signed a one year, $700,000 contract. Last season, he played in 32 games with the San Antonio Rampage, the AHL affiliate for the St. Louis Blues, through which he posted a 3.15 GAA and a .886 SV%. Over his NHL career, he has played in 21 games and posted a 3.74 GAA and a .880 SV%. Over his AHL career, Coreau has appeared in 193 games, over which he owns a 2.62 GAA and a .912 SV%. The 27-year-old goaltender was an undrafted free agent and signed prior to the 2013-14 season with the Grand Rapid Griffins, the AHL affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings. This will be Coreau’s fourth organization in what will be his eighth season of his professional career.
- Simon Holmström, F. Holmström signed his three year entry level contract, which is worth $2.775 million and carries a $925,000 AAV. Last season, he played for the HV71 J20 team of the Swedish SuperElit league, appearing in 21 games, in which he recorded 20 points. He also played in three games for the HV71 J18 team, during which he tallied four points. He played in three playoff games with the J20 team, in which he produced three points. He also appeared in five playoff games for the J18 team, over which he put up three points. Over his J18 team career, Holmström played in 37 games and tallied 25 points. Over his J20 career, he has played in 49 games and produced 50 points. The 18-year-old winger was drafted 23rd in 2019 by the Islanders, and he will report back to HV71 on a loan this upcoming season and will most likely play for their SHL team.
This post will be updated later if and when the team makes any more signings.
