Free Agent Frenzy Recap- the Vancouver Canucks

The Vancouver Canucks followed up their busy draft with a relatively busy July 1st, in which they signed three players. This was expected as the team has a lot of young talent and appears to be making all these moves with the hopes of returning to the playoffs as soon as this upcoming season. Their biggest signing has yet to come though, as RFA forward Brock Boeser is still in need of a new contract, which won’t be cheap. Here’s a recap of their day and a short write-up on each player.

  • Tyler Myers, D. Myers was signed to a five-year contract worth $30 million ($6 million AAV). In 80 games played with the Winnipeg Jets last season, he tallied nine goals and 22 assists. He also played in six playoff games for the team, but he did not record any points in them. Drafted 12th overall of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft by the Buffalo Sabres, Myers has appeared in 635 career NHL games, over which he has produced 74 goals and 191 assists. The 29-year-old defenseman is leaving his team of the past four and a half season in the Jets, and will be on his third team overall over his ten season NHL career.
  • Jordie Benn, D. Benn was signed to a two-year contract worth $4 million ($2 million AAV). In 81 games played for the Montreal Canadiens last season, he produced five goals and 17 assists. Signed as an undrafted free agent by the Dallas Stars before the 2010-11 season, Benn has appeared in 473 career NHL games, over which he has recorded 22 goals and 88 assists. The 31-year-old defenseman is on his third team over his eight season NHL career.
  • Oscar Fantenberg, D. Fantenberg was signed to a one-year contract worth $850,000. In 61 games played last season, he put up two goals and one assist. He started the season with the Los Angeles Kings, but he was traded at the deadline to the Calgary Flames. He appeared in three playoff games for the Flames, in which he recorded zero points. Signed by the Kings as an undrafted free agent prior to 2017-18 season, Fantenberg has appeared in 88 career NHL games, over which he has produced four goals and nine assists. The 27-year-old defenseman is on his third organization over his two season NHL career.
  • Josh Leivo, F. Leive was resigned to a one-year, $1.5 million contract on July 5th. In 76 games played last season, he produced 14 goals and ten assists. He started the season with the Toronto Maple Leafs, but he was traded on December 3rd, 2018 to the Vancouver Canucks. Drafted in the third round (86th overall) of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft by the Leafs, Leivo has appeared in 133 career NHL games, over which he has produced 24 goals and 22 assists. The 26-year-old wing had previously spent all of his six-season NHL career with Toronto prior to his trade to the Canucks this season.
  • Michael Ferland, F. Ferland was signed to a four-year contract worth $14 million ($3.5 million AAV) on July 10th. In 71 games played for the Carolina Hurricanes last season, he tallied 17 goals and 23 assists. He also appeared in seven playoff games for the team, in which he produced zero goals and one assist. Drafted in the fifth round (133rd overall) of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft by the Calgary Flames, Ferland has appeared in 321 career NHL games, over which he has recorded 59 goals and 70 assists. The 27-year-old wing is on his third organization over his five season NHL career.
