Free Agent Frenzy Recap- the Arizona Coyotes

The Arizona Coyotes were relatively quiet on July 1st as they only signed depth players. They made their big splash two days earlier when they traded for Phil Kessel. It was expected that they would stay quiet after that, as it ate up most of the rest of their cap space and it wasn’t necessary or smart to make another big move. Anyways, here’s a recap of the signings they made and a short write-up on each player.

  • Andy Miele, F. Miele was signed to a two-year contract worth $1.4 million ($700,000 AAV). He did not appear in any NHL games last season, but he did play in 61 games for Nizhny Novgorod Torpedo of the KHL, in which he produced 16 goals and 16 assists. Signed by the Arizona Coyotes as an undrafted free agent before the 2011-12 season, Miele has appeared in 15 career NHL games, in which he has recorded zero goals and two assists. He has also appeared in 420 career AHL games for the Portland Pirates, Grand Rapids Griffins, and the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, in which he has tallied 119 goals and 249 assists. The 31-year-old center has played for three different organizations over his six professional seasons in North America.

  • Beau Bennett, F. Bennett was signed to a one-year contract worth $700,000. He did not appear in any NHL games last season, and he did not play much at all, appearing in just five games for Dinamo Minsk of the KHL, in which he recorded zero goals and one assist. I’m assuming this is due to a serious injury, but I’m not certain so I’m not going to speculate too much. Drafted 20th overall of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft by the Pittsburgh Penguins, Bennett has appeared in 200 career NHL games, in which he has produced 24 goals and 40 assists. The 27-year-old right wing is on his fourth organization over his six-season NHL career.

  • Aaron Ness, D. Ness was signed to a two-year contract worth $1.4 million ($700,000 AAV). He did not play in the NHL last season, but he did appear in 71 games for the Washington Capitals’ AHL affiliate, the Hershey Bears, in which he tallied 5 goals and an impressive 50 assists. He also appeared in six playoff games for the team, in which he recorded zero goals and two assists. Drafted in the second round (40th overall) of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft by the New York Islanders, Ness has appeared in 47 career NHL games, in which he has put up one goal and five assists. He has also appeared in 519 career AHL games and has amassed 43 goals and 208 assists in them. The 29-year-old defenseman is on his third organization over his eight-season professional career.

This post will be updated if and when the team makes any more signings.
