Free Agent Frenzy Recap: the Nashville Predators

The Nashville Predators only made two signings on July 1st, but they made a lot of noise as they signed one of the top UFAs in Matt Duchene to a massive seven-year, $56 million contract. This was expected of them, as they had long been rumored to be wanting to Duchene and Duchene wanted to go to them and will be a perfect fit on the team and in the city. I wrote a separate post on him, which you can find under the Nashville Predators tab on the blog. Anyways, here’s a recap of their day and a short write-up on each of the players.

  • Matt Duchene, F. Duchene was signed to a seven-year, $56 million contract ($8 million AAV). In 73 games played last season, he put up 31 goals and 39 assists. He started the season with the Ottawa Senators before being traded at the deadline to the Columbus Blue Jackets, with whom he appeared in ten playoff games, in which he tallied five goals and five assists. Drafted third overall of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft by the Colorado Avalanche, Duchene has appeared in 727 career NHL games, in which he has produced 232 goals and 315 assists. The 28-year-old center is on his fourth team over his ten season NHL career.
  • Daniel Carr, F. Carr was signed to a one-year, $700,000 contract. He appeared in six games for the Vegas Golden Knights last season, in which he recorded just one goal to go along with zero assists. While he did not see much NHL ice time, he produced at well over a point per game pace in the AHL for the Knights’ affiliate, the Chicago Wolves, tallying 30 goals and 41 assists in 52 games. He was named AHL MVP for his efforts. He also played in 15 playoff games for the Wolves as they went to the Calder Cup Finals (where they lost in five games to the Charlotte Checkers), and he put up five goals and seven assists in those games. Signed as an undrafted free agent by the Montreal Canadiens prior to the start of the 2015-16 season, Carr has appeared in 100 career NHL games, in which he has collected 15 goals and 20 assists. He has also played in 191 career AHL games, in which he has produced 81 goals and 80 assists. The 27-year-old left wing is on his third organization over his five-season professional career.

This post will be updated if and when the team makes any more signings.
