The Ottawa Senators had a relatively quiet July 1st signing-wise, although they did make a big trade with the Toronto Maple Leafs. This was expected given they are in full-on rebuild mode and the organization is a bit of a dumpster fire between owner and management issues and on-ice play that no one in their right mind would want to go to (sorry that’s harsh but the truth hurts). Here’s a recap of their day and a short write-up on each of the players they signed.
- Ron Hainsey, D. Hainsey was signed to a one-year contract worth $3.5 million. In 81 games played for the Toronto Maple Leafs this season, he produced five goals and 18 assists. He also played in seven playoff games for the team, in which he recorded zero goals and one assist. Drafted 13th overall in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft by the Montreal Canadiens, Hainsey has 58 goals and 241 assists in 1,068 career NHL games. The 38-year-old defenseman is on his sixth organization in 16 seasons.
- Tyler Ennis, F. Ennis was signed to a one-year contract worth $800,000. In 51 games played for the Toronto Maple Leafs last season, he tallied 12 goals and six assists. He also played in five playoff games for the team, adding zero goals and two assists in them. Drafted 26th overall in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft by the Buffalo Sabres, Ennis has appeared in 543 career NHL games, over which he has recorded 117 goals and 159 assists. The 29-year-old left wing is on his fourth team in ten seasons.
- Jordan Szwarz, F. Szwarz was signed to a one-year contract worth $800,000. He did not play in the NHL last season, but in 68 AHL games for the Bruins’ affiliate, the Providence Bruins, he had 23 goals and 23 assists. He added 2 goals and 2 assists in 4 playoff games. Drafted in the fourth round (97th overall) in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft by the then-Phoenix Coyotes, Szwarz has played 47 career NHL games across parts of three seasons, most recently 2017-18, in which he has tallied four goals and three assists. The 28-year-old right-wing is on his third organization in eight professional seasons.
- Christian Wolanin, D. Wolanin was re-signed to a two-year contract worth $1.8 million ($900,000 AAV). In 30 NHL games for the Ottawa Senators last season, he recorded four goals and eight assists. He also played 40 games in the AHL, where he produced seven goals and 24 assists for the Senators’ AHL affiliate, the Belleville Senators. Drafted in the fourth round (107th overall) in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft by the Senators, he has played in 40 career NHL games, in which he has tallied five goals and ten assists. The 24-year-old defenseman has only ever played for the Senators in his professional career.
This post will be updated later with my thoughts on their day.
