The Detroit Red Wings signed three players on July 1st but made their biggest move back in March when they resigned goaltender Jimmy Howard to a one-year contract worth $5.1 million. Here’s a recap of their day and a brief write-up on each player.
- Patrik Nemeth, D. Nemeth was signed to a two-year contract worth $6 million ($3 million AAV). In 74 games for the Avalanche last season, he tallied one goal and nine assists. He also played in seven playoff games for them but recorded no points. Drafted in the second round (41st overall) in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft by the Dallas Stars, he has recorded four goals and 35 assists in 250 career NHL games. The 27-year-old defenseman is on his third team in six seasons.
- Valterri Filppula, F. Filppula was signed to a two-year contract worth $6 million ($3 million AAV). In 72 games for the Islanders last season, he recorded 17 goals and 14 assists. He added zero goals and four assists for them in eight playoff games. Drafted in the third round (95th overall) in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft by the Red Wings, he has tallied 185 goals and 309 assists in 948 career NHL games. The 35-year-old center is on his fourth team in 12 seasons.
- Calvin Pickard, G. Pickard was signed to a two-year contract worth $1.5 million ($750,000 AAV). Drafted in the second round (49th overall) by the Colorado Avalanche, he owns a 2.93 GAA and 0.908 SV% in 104 career NHL games. The 27-year-old netminder is on his fifth team in five seasons.
This post will be updated later with my thoughts on their day. To be honest, I do not know much about them and what they needed, so I probably won’t say much because I don’t want to just make things up. I do have a general idea of it though, so stay tuned!
